For regulated nurses and physicians, keeping resuscitation and first-aid skills current is part of ongoing competence and is often an employer requirement; for care-assistant roles it is a condition of entering the field. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Clinically relevant training such as BLS or CPR can be documented within the continuing-competence program, and in acute-care and residential settings a current BLS or CPR certificate is generally an employer requirement rather than a licensing condition.

Continuing competence is mandatory but not counted in fixed hours: the BCCNM program is built on self-assessment and self-directed learning relevant to practice rather than a set number of credits.

For care assistants the requirement is explicit. The provincial Health Care Assistant (HCA) certificate — required to work in assisted living and home support — requires a valid Standard First Aid with CPR Level C certificate before the first clinical placement. This recognized standalone certificate is a required component of entering the role in addition to the HCA program, and it must be kept current, so it is renewed on schedule.
